Call Ratio Backspread Calculator

Sell one call and buy two higher calls. Profits from a big rally; a small rise toward the long strikes is the worst case.

A call ratio backspread sells one call and buys two calls at a higher strike on the same expiry, often for a small credit or near zero cost. It wants a large rally: above the long strike the two long calls outrun the one short call and the gain is open-ended. The worst outcome is the stock finishing exactly at the long strike, where the short call is in the money and the long calls expire worthless.

When it is used

Traders use it when they expect a sharp move up, such as into a catalyst, but want little or no loss if the stock instead falls. Placed for a credit it even earns a little if the stock collapses. It is a long-volatility position in the direction of the move.

How it makes and loses money

A strong rally and rising implied volatility are what pay. A modest rally that stalls near the long strike is the problem, especially late in the trade, because the short call is losing while the long calls are decaying. A drop returns the credit, or costs the small debit.

What to check in the grid

Find the valley at the long strike on the expiry column, then look at the same row in the early columns. Before expiry the valley is shallower, because the long calls still carry time value, and that difference is the argument for closing rather than holding to the end if the rally stalls.
